Abstract
Typical problems to be confronted with when trying to understand "pathological" star members of the young Orion population are given. A methodology to achieve useful results in some cases of such stars is discussed, with the limited observational capability of medium to small observatories in mind. is given here as an example, where distance and luminosity estimates as well as probable spectral type and other properties of the star are discussed.
