Abstract
This paper presents a summary of current views on the interpretation of the various evolutionary tests aimed at detecting spectral evolution in galaxies. It is concluded that the evolution taking place in known galaxy samples is a slow process (perhaps consistent with no evolution at all), and that the early phases of rapid spectral evolution in early-type galaxies have not been detected yet.
