Abstract
Major developments in observational astronomy in the southern hemisphere over the last 10 years are reviewed and an effort is made to project the course along which the newly available instrumentation and observing techniques are leading us. Emphasis is given to the need for increased based support in the southern hemisphere for future space telescopes. Special mention is made of the importance of Magellanic Cloud studies and of the need for further work on binary and multiple stars.
