Abstract

The radiative transfer equation is solved for a mixture of stars and dust grains distributed homogenously in an infinite plane parallel configuration. The effects of absorption and multiple scattering of light due to dust grains with the same optical properties as the interstellar dust in the Balaxy are included. The value-s of the albedo and the asymmetry factor published in the literature to solve the problem in the range from 1000 to 10000 A. The results are presented in the form of correction factors as a function of wavelength1 inclination angle, and optical depth, , of the system. These factors can be used to correct the spectru. of a mixture 0+ stars and dust to obtain the spectrum of the stellar component alone. It is found that for < 1 these factors depend critically on the inclination angle. The surface brightness profiles of spiral galaxies do not show this dependence, Nhich implies that for these galaxies > 1. For values of t > 1 the difference between our correction factors and the standard reddening law is large, especially in the ultraviolet region of the spectrum. It is concluded that our correction factors should be prefered over the standard reddening law to unredden galaxy spectra.
