Abstract

Lw surface brightness maps at 2.2 and 1.25 µm are presented for an IRAS selected sample composed of 3 elliptical and 7 S0 galaxies. In most cases we have found smooth structures which apparently follow the stellar distribution as inferred from the optical images and that the IR emission is more extended. Elongated structures, reminiscent of "jets", are present in a number of galaxies. These 11jets" do not have optical counterparts in the PoSS. This fact suggests a rather steep spectral index between the visible and infrared wavelengths. Fran data at other wavelengths taken from the literature, we have derived spectral energy distributions from .3 to 100 µm. All objects in our sample show a steep α60-l00 µm -l to -2, while in the near IR the energy distributions are characteristic and hence dominated by the presence of a stellar bulge.
