Abstract

Relative abundances of H, He, C, N, O, Ne, S, Cl, and Ar are derived from photoelectric spectrophotometry of emission lines in the 3400-7400 A region for several type I, He-N rich planetary nebulae. Consideration of the collisional excitation from the He I 2 3S level indicates that there is a very efficient process of depopulation, probably ionization, which reduces collisional effects. It is suggested that the collisional excitation from the 2 3S level in metal-poor extragalactic H II regions is almost negligible.
