History

Brief overview of the journal's trajectory

The Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica Serie de Conferencias (RMxAC) emerged from the early publications of the Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica (RMxAA), founded in 1974 with the objective of disseminating Latin American astronomical research in all branches of astronomy, astrophysics, and related topics. In turn, that publication was preceded by the Boletín de los Observatorios de Tonantzintla y Tacubaya, distributed in various astronomical institutions from 1952 to 1972.

The Editorial Group that founded RMxAC was comprised of Eugenio E. Mendoza, Paris Pishmish, and Silvia Torres de Peimbert, all leaders of the astronomical community in Mexico. Initially, the RMxAC Editorial Board consisted of three people and included, at various times, in addition to the founding group, astronomers Jorge Cantó, Carlos Cruz González, Claudio Firmani, and Luis F. Rodríguez. RMxAA published original research and proceedings of astronomical congresses.

During the initial period and up to 1994, RMxAA, in addition to publishing original research articles, included special volumes issued as the proceedings of 13 astronomical symposia in the region. Later, in 1995, this second activity was spun off, giving rise to the Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica Serie de Conferencias (RMxAC), dedicated exclusively to the publication of proceedings with the results of astronomical meetings. The editor of RMxAC is Silvia Torres. It is thanks to the efforts of the editorial group and the trust of hundreds of authors that RMxAC positioned itself as a respected publication in the community for many years. Although it is oriented towards meetings on the continent, it receives texts from authors from various countries outside the region.

Since its foundation, it has been free and open access for individuals and institutions related to the fields covered by the journal. RMxAC receives manuscripts from specialists in many parts of the world, and its content covers a great diversity of topics. The format of this publication was printed and distributed free of charge to the libraries of organizations conducting astronomical research in at least 50 countries. Since 2000, the complete collection has also been presented digitally in open access. Starting in 2020, following current trends, the presentation will be exclusively digital.

Number of articles and Global impact

External authorship

For more than 30 years, the Revista Mexicana de Astronomía y Astrofísica Serie de Conferencias has published original research contributions written by individuals or groups affiliated with the host institution (Instituto de Astronomía, UNAM), other Mexican institutions (other institutes at UNAM and universities and research centers), and institutions located in more than 70 countries. RMxAC is considered a journal of global interest.

According to data from the Astrophysical Data System (ADS), the most numerous contributions come from a list of 908 unique authors in 4149 contributions.
